Before the age of plastics, Invisalign and stainless steel, braces were made of brass or gold. Lacking the resilience and tensile strength of stainless steel, these braces deformed easily in the mouth during chewing, and had to be adjusted frequently. They were very costly, and only wealthy people could afford them.
