When the adult teeth erupt into the mouth, they are guided by the lips, cheeks and tongue, and by the anatomy of the opposing teeth as well as that of the erupting teeth. Sometimes they do not erupt into the correct position, with the upper teeth overlapping outside the lower teeth; they develop into a crossbite.


On rarer occasions, developing teeth become displaced and end up impacting against other teeth.
