It depends on how deeply impacted the tooth is, and the age of the patient. Is the impacted tooth inclined at a very bad angle? (You would need radiographs to assess this.) Is there a lot of surrounding bone? Is there very little space available? The radiographs below show how an impacted wisdom tooth freed itself spontaneously, without any intervention at all. No surgery or orthodontic treatment was needed to free the impacted lower wisdom tooth highlighted below. This patient saved himself from unnecessary costs and trauma of surgery.
