Dry mouth due to reduced saliva flow is common amongst older adults, affecting about 1 in 5 adults. Dryness could be a side effect of taking multiple medications. Besides a dry, sore throat, people with dry mouth may have difficulty swallowing, problems wearing dentures, problems eating, and inflammation of the tongue, lips & oral mucosa. They also face an increased risk of tooth decay. People who had radiotherapy for head and neck cancer may have xerostomia (dry mouth) because of damage to the salivary glands from X-ray irradiation. It is very important for them to avoid cariogenic foods as they are prone to tooth decay.
