Sometimes the tongue may develop a thick coat of fur. This happens when the dead cells on the tongue do not shed off, or when there is infection of bacteria or fungi. Bacterial or fungal infections sometimes develop when our immunity is weakened (such as in the elderly, the bed-ridden, the diabetics), when we take certain drugs, or in severely malnourished people. Seek medical attention if your furry tongue persists for a few weeks, despite your efforts to clean it with a tongue brush or scraper.
