Childhood is a time when humans learn and build their habits. That’s why good habits need to be cultivated throughout childhood. Dental habits are one of many other habits which are important for children. There are many things your child needs to learn right from early childhood. Here are some good dental habits for your child to follow.

  1. Brush your teeth

Brushing our teeth may sound simple to us. But sometimes children easily forget it. That’s why as a parent, we need to remind our children to do it at least twice a day. Don’t let a child go to bed without brushing their teeth; it will become a bad habit if they get used to it. Brushing your teeth together with your child will help your child develop a good habit and strengthen your relationship with him.

  1. Brushing it properly

The way we brush our teeth can affect the teeth health. That’s why we need to teach our children how to brush our teeth properly. It may take time, but the children will be able to keep their teeth clean for themselves. Move the toothbrush in gentle, circular motions to remove bacterial plaque. Unremoved plaque can harden, leading to various degrees of gum diseases. Don’t forget to gently brush the tongue after we have finished with the teeth because plaque can also build up on our tongue. It’s also important to replace the toothbrush every three months or so to ensure its effectiveness because weak collapsing bristles will lessen the effectiveness.

  1. Use fluoride products for our teeth

Fluoride is an important material to keep our teeth healthy, it fights the germs and provides a protective barrier for our teeth. We need to use toothpaste and mouth rinse which contain fluoride so that our teeth will be protected from the germs.

  1. Floss daily

Flossing may be difficult for children but if you find it difficult, you can use ready-to-use flossers. Flossing can stimulate the gums, reduce plaque, and help lower inflammation in the areas between our teeth.

  1. Drink more water

Drinking water regularly can help us decrease the deleterious effects of sticky and acidic foods. It is also good for our body to stay hydrated at the same time, as being dehydrated can cause you to fall sick easily.

  1. Visit the dentist regularly

Visiting a good orthodontist in Singapore will help your children to maintain their teeth health and monitor the development of their growing dentition and jaws. The dentist can help them if there is something wrong with their teeth. Oral check-ups and teeth cleaning by the dentist can help the children to prevent gum diseases, cavities, and other oral diseases. If your children are afraid of the dentist, you can accompany your children or bring them to their favourite place after visiting the dentist.

  1. A healthy diet for your body

Fruits and vegetables will help our body to strengthen our bones and teeth. Calcium and Vitamin D will build good and solid teeth. Limiting the intake of sodas and other acidic snacks and beverages will help us to control the acidic condition in our mouth too. Drink the acidic beverages with straw to avoid direct contact between the teeth and the beverages

  1. Avoid bad habits

You need to teach your children to avoid bad habits which can damage their teeth. For example, crunching ice cubes, sucking their thumbs, frequent snacking on confectionery and sweet drinks and other things. Those harmful foods will damage the teeth enamel and make it easier for the germs to attack our teeth.
